Hoopdata’s Fun New Stat Grapher

I found this ridiculously fun stat graphing tool on a link off of Neil Payne’s Basketball-Reference blog and will now be checking out Hoopdata every day.

Basically you can check what effect different stats have on each other over time or with increases in usage or whatever criteria you want to use. Right now it’s only showing 1999-2010, but there’s still a lot of data in there. It takes some playing around to get the hang of, but it’s worth it if you have an interest in NBA stats.

Something I’ve wondered about for a long time is whether or not the notion that increased usage leads to decreased efficiency holds any water when applied to star players. Hoopdata’s tool shows that the connection is minimal for stars like Kobe and LeBron.

This tool gets my highest recommendation – 2 Jumpmen Up
