Kirk Hinrich Leaving Chicago?

I know why the Bulls did it. They have now cleared enough cap space to sign 2 top-level free agents and still have their nominal 3 best players in place (Rose, Noah, and Deng). But I still don’t like it.

Kirk has been the face of the franchise since the Dynasty was broken up after the 1998 NBA Finals. He’s been a Bull since 2005. His 2006-07 season was the top (by Win Share) of any guard since Michael Jordan left and the second best overall by any player at any position on the Bulls.

Hinrich was not a player I expected to like coming out of college. I thought his lack of explosiveness and aggressiveness would be too much to overcome with grit, heady play, and shooting touch. I underestimated Kirk’s lateral quickness and competitiveness. He has been one of the best defensive guards at the 1 and the 2 since he entered the league, a terrific transition shooter, and an under-appreciated passer.

It's fun to play at the Y-M-C-A!

The Bulls are going to miss him, especially Derek Rose. Hinrich masked Rose’s poor man to man defense and perimeter shooting. I’m going to miss him as a fan as well. He’s been my favorite Bull since he was drafted and one of my favorite players in the league. I’m not sure how he’s going to fit with Washington where John Wall is due big minutes as the #1 overall pick and Arenas is due big minutes as a $100,000,000 contract. Here’s hoping they turn around and send send him to Miami for Michael Beasley, because Kirk and Wade are the perfect back court. Unless Chicago uses the cap space to sign Dwyane Wade…
