Beastmaster, Starring Blake Griffin

by

It was quite an NBA debut for Blake Griffin.  In his first game, he posted a double double.  His 20 points and 14 rebounds were indicative of his greater value.  The man is a beast.  Scratch that.  He’s a beastmaster.  Nine of his 14 rebound were offensive rebounds.  He strength, athleticism, and hustle were on display.  And in addition to his big man skills, Griffin is a solid passer.  He had four assists to go with his double double.  And he was efficient: shooting 57% with only 2 turnovers.

Griffin, in a previous life.

Of course, every game won’t be like this.  It’s still his rookie year after all.  But it was a very promising game.  Griffin seemed to be in the flow of the game.  And he was very good at playing both as a focal point, offensively, and off the ball.  Comparisons to Karl Malone and Shawn Kemp are both apt.  The kid is a beastmaster.

Care to revise your pick of rookie of the year?

  2. jpalumbo Says:

Yeah, looks like the best rookie pg since Paul and Deron came out.

I can’t believe you’re comparing this kid to Shawn Kemp. The Reign Man was born an 8-year NBA veteran.

Actually, NathanD, if you compare Kemp’s first couple of seasons versus the admittedly small sample size we have for Griffin, he’s right on par with Rain Man. I think he can easily peak out at or above Rain Man’s best year (95-96) within a couple of years.

  4. jpalumbo Says:

Maybe, but Kemp looked more like 6′ 10″ gremlin than Griff. It’s not even close.

    • pmadavi Says:

Plus, on the populating the earth with athletic seed, Kemp has everyone but Wilt beat. Let’s hope Beastmaster never goes down that road.

  5. NathanD Says:

Also, Kemp was the only guy jpalumbo would let me cheer for. Whenever I got excited about Iverson, the kendo started happening.
