Happy Holiday Shooting Stats from Double Dribble

by

Did anybody else notice that 4 of our top 5 MVP candidates through the first third of the NBA season are having career years shooting the ball from the three point line? Chris Paul is shooting his career average of .361 from three. Not bad at all, but the others are all going off from deep, even with Bryant on the slide a bit lately. Take a look at the top 4 non-CP3 MVP candidates so far this year in the below table (courtesy of Basketball-Reference):

Per Shoot
Player MP FG FGA 3P 3PA FT FTA PTS FG% 3P%
Kevin Durant 39.5 9.0 17.3 1.6 3.7 8.3 9.2 27.9 .521 .427
LeBron James 37.5 9.9 18.3 1.4 3.2 4.1 6.0 25.4 .542 .442
Kobe Bryant 38.6 10.1 21.5 2.1 5.7 7.3 8.5 29.7 .471 .374
Carmelo Anthony 36.0 9.7 20.6 2.6 5.9 6.4 7.7 28.3 .468 .437

It looks like Santa delivered early to these four and gave them all the same present – touch from deep. Here’s the same crew for the 2012 season:

Per Shoot
Player MP FG FGA 3P 3PA FT FTA PTS FG% 3P%
LeBron James 37.5 10.0 18.9 0.9 2.4 6.2 8.1 27.1 .531 .362
Kevin Durant 38.6 9.7 19.7 2.0 5.2 6.5 7.6 28.0 .496 .387
Carmelo Anthony 34.1 8.0 18.6 1.2 3.7 5.4 6.7 22.6 .430 .335
Kobe Bryant 38.5 9.9 23.0 1.5 4.9 6.6 7.8 27.9 .430 .303

Sorry the player order isn’t the same – sorted by Win Shares. Finally the breakdown of three point percentage improvement from last season to this:

Carmelo Anthony + 10%
LeBron James + 8%
Kobe Bryant + 7%
Kevin Durant + 4%

Christmas KD!

Christmas KD!

I’m really not sure to what we should attribute this change. They all played on the Olympic team this summer. Did Coach K introduce them to some secret JJ Redick shooting drill? Did they hang out with Dirk and come away with extra shooting range by Nosmosis? With the exception of Durant, all of their per game three point attempts are up from last year as well. Is the league playing faster this year, giving them more deep shots in transition? Some magic in that old silk headband they found? It’s a Christmas carol. It’s Frosty the Snowman. Sing a song!
